Web of Benefit's Founder Awarded "Be The Change Award"
BOSTON, MA- December 9, 2010: The Massachusetts Conference for Women announces: The Be the Change Award, created in conjunction with our generous award sponsor, Canyon Ranch, has recognized a Massachusetts woman who personifies compassion for her community and to improving the everyday lives of those around her.
This year, we chose to honor a woman whose personal story gave her the motivation to start an organization benefitting women impacted b y domestic violence. A successful entrepreneur, this years winner has created an organization that helps women reclaim their dignity and economic self-sufficiency, giving them the strength and resources to start a new life apart from their abuser.
For the past thirty years, Johanna Crawford has been dedicated to community service in a wide variety of areas, including the arts, education, and healthcare. As a young girl, Johanna witnessed the abuse her mother received and has since made it her mission to help victims of domestic violence. Combining her spirit of entrepreneurship, community service, and passion for assisting survivors of domestic violence, she created Web of Benefit, Inc. (WOB) in 2004.
The uniqueness of the program begins with requiring the women served to define their goals and dreams and then planning step by step to achieve success. WOBs unique services are for women who have removed themselves from violent situations for a minimum of six months.
Web of Benefits innovative, sustainable and entirely replicable Transition to Self- Sufficiency Program has two components. The first offers Self- Sufficiency Grants to women who need help as they create a plan for economic survival once they leave a shelter or transitional living program. The second component, the Good Works Program, requires all grant recipients to perform three good works for other women in need, creating a network of trust and a sense of community in which each woman can feel safe while finding the support she needs to gain true independence.
This truly is an organization that not only gives back to women who have been pained and abused, it also provides the resources, training and motivation needed for each woman to become truly independent and self-sufficient. Each woman realizes her potential and goes after what she wants. WOB has helped immigrant women obtain visas, provided air fare to reunite a mother with her children, given security deposits for permanent housing, contributed tuition dollars and much more. In just six years, Johanna has personally worked one-on-one with more than 650 survivors of domestic violence, and an additional 1,950 have received critical assistance through WOBs Self- Sufficiency Program.
